Play Date merges the Internet and SMS Text messaging. It appears to only really cater for the USA. A UK number will not fit into their signup box! It does advertise the fact that it works in Europe too, however.

They have over 35,000 profiles online which you can search from the website, but messages are sent via SMS.

Membership is required but this is low cost. It includes 50 SMS messages.

Have a look if phone texting suits you better than using the Internet to communicate.
